EFFECTIVE GOAT PRODUCTION
This relies on a combination of good feeding practices, disease prevention measures, and parasite control. This includes providing a balanced diet, implementing vaccination and deworming schedules, and practicing regular dipping or spraying to manage external parasites. Proper hygiene and housing also play a crucial role in overall goat health.
Feeding:
Nutritional Needs:
Goats require a diet that is balanced in carbohydrates, protein, digestible fiber, minerals, and vitamins.
Forage:
High-quality forage, such as pasture or hay, should form the base of the diet.
Supplementary Feed:
Consider providing supplementary feed based on available resources, especially for lactating does, growing kids, and animals in late pregnancy.
Water:
Ensure a constant supply of fresh, clean water.
Disease Prevention:
Vaccination: Establish a vaccination program to protect against common diseases like enterotoxemia (CDT).
Deworming: Implement a deworming schedule for internal parasites, using effective dewormers like ivermectin or fenbendazole.
Dipping/Spraying: Regularly treat goats with dips or sprays to control external parasites like ticks and lice, which can transmit diseases and reduce productivity.
Hygiene: Maintain clean and well-ventilated housing to minimize disease spread.
Isolation: Isolate sick goats immediately to prevent the spread of disease.
Early Detection: Regularly observe goats for signs of illness, and consult a veterinarian promptly if needed.
Specific Practices:
Coccidiosis Prevention: Begin monitoring fecal samples for coccidia and implementing preventative measures by three weeks of age.
Tetanus Prevention: Consider tetanus vaccination, especially for goats kept in environments with sharp objects.
Foot Rot Prevention: Practice foot trimming and maintain dry conditions to prevent foot rot.
