As MDI Calls for More Extension
Officers to Revolutionize Zambian Agriculture
In a
compelling call to action, the Muvombo Development
Initiative (MDI) has urged the Zambian government to urgently scale up the
deployment of agricultural extension officers across the country—calling the
move a vital step toward unlocking the full potential of Zambia's agricultural
sector.
Speaking on One Love Radio’s live program
The Neighborhood, MDI Director Winter Muvombo passionately advocated for a
robust investment in both human capital and infrastructure to transform
agriculture into the true backbone of the national economy.
“We need to bring extension services closer
to the farmers,” Mr. Muvombo emphasized, “and this starts by deploying the many
capable and eager young graduates from agricultural colleges like NRDC. They
are ready to serve, and our farmers desperately need their expertise on the
ground.”
Mr. Muvombo’s message was not just about
job creation but also about protecting the country’s food security.
He stressed that with the right number of
trained extension officers in the field, Zambia would be better equipped to
combat recurring outbreaks of crop and livestock diseases.
Highlighting a neglected research facility
in Makeni, he painted a sobering picture of the country’s outdated disease
control infrastructure.
“The tools and apparatus are worn out, the
computers obsolete. How can we expect to control pests like fall armyworms or
manage animal diseases without revitalizing our research centres?” he
questioned.
The MDI director proposed a twin-track
approach: increasing the number of extension officers in the field and
revamping agricultural research centres across Zambia.
This, he said, would empower young
agricultural graduates to conduct impactful research, support farmers with
timely advice, and enable proactive disease management.
Mr. Muvombo also called for the expansion
of essential infrastructure such as dip tanks in rural areas—critical in
preventing livestock disease outbreaks.
“If we are serious about moving away from
over-reliance on mining and turning agriculture into our economic beacon, then
this is where we must begin—by investing in manpower and research,” he
asserted.
He concluded with a heartfelt appeal to the
government: “Let us tilt the national budget toward agriculture. Let us empower
our farmers, our youth, and our future.”
With voices like Muvombo's rising, Zambia may soon see a new era where agriculture doesn’t just feed the nation—but drives it forward.
