From Ashes to Action: How Carbon Trading is Saving Zambia’s Vanishing Forests

ONCE blanketed by dense, sprawling forests, Zambia’s heartland now tells a different story—one marked by years of deforestation and shrinking biodiversity.
But as the land changes, so too does the response: farmers, policymakers, and conservationists are racing to find new ways to balance agricultural growth with the urgent need to protect what remains.
For years, stakeholders from agriculture to livestock and beyond have struggled to offer lasting solutions. But amidst the dwindling canopies, a new ray of hope is emerging—carbon trading.
Carbon trading, as defined by Investopedia, is the buying and selling of credits that allow companies to emit a certain amount of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases.
Sanctioned by governments, this initiative aims to gradually reduce global emissions while simultaneously preserving critical ecosystems. In Zambia, it’s doing just that—offering an innovative tool to curb deforestation.
One pioneering force behind this transformation is BioCarbon Partners (BCP), a conservation-focused social enterprise that’s reshaping Africa’s green economy. Since launching in Zambia in 2012, BCP has been using the REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) framework to implement impactful forestry projects that protect vital ecosystems while empowering local communities.
A Groundbreaking Start in Rufunsa
With early support from MUSIKA, a Swedish-funded non-profit, BCP incubated Zambia’s first REDD+ project in Rufunsa District in 2013. Since then, the Luangwa Community Forests Project (LCFP) has grown into Africa’s largest REDD+ initiative, benefiting around 175,000 families.
Through conservation farming, eco-charcoal production, and beekeeping, BCP has provided alternative livelihoods that reduce dependence on destructive practices like charcoal burning. These community-driven solutions are not just reducing deforestation—they are changing lives.
Chiefs, Villagers, and Visionaries: A Community Awakens
His Royal Highness Senior Chief Luembe, Chairman of the House of Chiefs, partnered with BCP to uphold their shared value of environmental stewardship.
“We have seen a lot of change—in wildlife, in the care of our forests, and in the lives of our people,” said the Chief, referencing BCP’s 2023 Impact Report. “Climate-smart agriculture has brought both development and resilience to our chiefdom.”
Senior Headman Chipungu of Namanongo agrees. “BCP introduced us to eco-charcoal and taught us to preserve trees,” he explained. “We’ve learned that trees bring rain and shield us from climate disasters like droughts and floods.”
Chipungu has since led efforts to discourage charcoal burning, seeing remarkable compliance from his community. With new income from honey harvesting, conservation farming, and equipment like hammer mills and oil expellers, lives are transforming.
From Trees to Tuition: The Ripple Effects of Carbon Finance
In 2012, BCP helped establish a cooperative in Namanongo. Cooperative Chairperson Absalom Mwale recalls how members embraced forest preservation once they understood its financial benefits through carbon sales.
“We were warned that harming the forest would reduce our income. That warning changed everything,” Mwale noted.
The resulting community projects—like boreholes that provide clean water and hammer mills that reduce labor for women—are tangible proof of the power of carbon finance.
In 2017, BCP supported the creation of Twikatishe Savings Group in Musashika Village. With an initial capital of K10, 000, the group grew their funds to K54, 000 within a year. Vice Chairperson Memory Kalyangile proudly shared their accomplishments:
“We bought goats, opened a private school, and are even paying a teacher’s salary. Before BCP, our lives were full of struggle. Now we are thriving.”
The Sweet Return of the Bees
Lead farmer Trust Muchimba highlighted how beekeeping replaced tree-cutting as a viable livelihood. At first, skepticism met the idea—but once villagers saw the benefits, they embraced it wholeheartedly. BCP helped connect them with Nature’s Nectar, raising honey prices from K7 to K20 per kilogram.
“Now, from the money we earn, we can buy fertilizer and send our children to school,” Muchimba said. “We’ve seen the streams dry up, and we know why. But we’ve also seen hope return.”
With 500 beekeepers, 5,000 distributed hives, and over 1,000 kilograms of honey harvested annually, Namanongo has become a model of forest-friendly development.
Measurable Impact, Lasting Change
According to Christopher Gunduza, BCP’s Technical Advisor for LCFP and the Lower Zambezi REDD+ Project (LZRP), community collaboration has resulted in sustainable land use and forest conservation.
As of 2023, BCP has:
Preserved 40,126 hectares of forest
Protected over 20.6 million trees
Disbursed $400,000 in carbon fees and livelihood funds
Implemented 67 community projects
Benefited over 5,875 community members, including 3,067 women
Reduced over 2.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions
“We’re paid to keep forests standing,” Gunduza said. “The trees act as carbon sinks—cleaning the air, protecting our water, and anchoring our climate.”
Senior Chief Luembe echoed these sentiments in a powerful call to action:
“Africa is often the forgotten continent when it comes to climate finance—receiving less than 3%—yet 30 of the 40 most climate-vulnerable countries are here.”
MUSIKA Managing Director Reuben Banda reaffirmed their commitment to forest protection, stating:
“We’re investing in solutions—alternatives to charcoal, reforestation, and community resilience. This is how we restore what’s been lost.”
A Future Rooted in Forests
BCP’s impact is more than ecological—it’s transformational. In Zambia’s once-threatened woodlands, hope is taking root. What was once a cycle of destruction is now a story of rebirth—where carbon credits fuel education, honey offsets hunger, and trees stand tall not only as guardians of nature but as symbols of a better future.
